Anna Matas, a partner at St. Lawrence Barristers, is an experienced litigator in the areas of personal injury and professional liability. Her practice focuses on the representation of survivors of sexual violence in both civil and administrative proceedings and the defence of regulated health care providers against allegations of medical negligence, professional misconduct, and other complaints. In addition, she represents plaintiffs and defendants in defamation cases and has significant experience with anti-SLAPP litigation (strategic litigation against public participation). In addition to the civil courts, Anna represents individuals before the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario, the Health Professions Appeal and Review Board, and other administrative tribunals.
With a background that stretches from Bay Street to boutique litigation firms to war crimes tribunals in East and West Africa, Anna brings a unique perspective to her work. She has expertise in offering fair and neutral advice on procedural and substantive legal matters, a skill set she has leveraged as Independent Legal Counsel in Discipline proceedings for regulated health professions. This work as a “neutral” also informs her work as a third-party investigator into allegations of workplace harassment and discrimination.
Anna has a trauma-informed approach to practice, which takes into account that legal proceedings are often challenging for all participants. She pairs creativity and realism in her approach to resolving legal issues and empowers clients by making the law accessible, to ensure they understand their options for pursuing justice. Clients trust Anna to provide insightful, practical advice that will advance their goals and lead to a successful resolution of their case.
Anna is committed to giving back in her profession and community. She has been a volunteer member of the Board of Directors of the Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic since 2016 and is currently the Chair of that Board. In this role, Anna assists in providing strategic direction and governance to the Clinic, which provides legal, counselling, and interpretation services to female-identified survivors of violence. Anna also spends significant time mentoring young lawyers, including through the Advocates’ Society and her alma mater, McGill Law.
Anna is the recipient of the Women’s Law Association of Ontario’s 2024 President’s Award for leadership and excellence in the legal community.
