Statement of Principles

As officers of the law, lawyers must always act with integrity and conscientiousness. Our firm takes this commitment seriously. As a start-up law firm, we have the privilege and freedom to be intentional with how we run our firm and where we spend our money.

The legal profession is a microcosm of the larger world. Unfortunately, just like the rest of the world, the legal profession is not immune from sexism, racism, and other “-isms”.

As members of the legal profession and lawyers who practice in social justice litigation, we need to lead by example.

On top of being staunch advocates for our clients, we also strive to uphold the following values and principles:

  1. Equality, diversity, and inclusion. Our firm is committed to an inclusive workplace that strives to eliminate barriers created by racism, unconscious bias and discrimination. Our firm takes seriously our responsibility to protect the dignity of all individuals, and to respect and uphold human rights laws in force in Ontario. Our firm is committed to taking on cases that create better opportunities and representation for all equity-seeking groups.
  2. Reconciliation and the fight for justice and equality for Indigenous peoples across Canada. Our physical office space lies on land that belongs to several nations, including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee, and the Wendat. We are grateful to have the opportunity to work on this land and acknowledge that we benefit, personally and professionally, from living and working on this land. Our firm is committed to a recognition of Indigenous land rights and self-government, an implementation of the calls to action issued by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, and the promotion of the justice and well-being for Indigenous peoples across Canada.
  3. Environmental consciousness, sustainability, and stewardship. Our firm is entirely paperless—which has the added benefit of reducing costs and increasing efficiency for our clients! Our firm makes environmental considerations a priority when planning new operations and engaging with new products (including by eliminating single-use products in the office). We also strive to proactively collaborate with environmental leaders in our community to develop new and innovative environmental initiatives.

Our values affect the work we take on, the businesses with whom we work, and the suppliers and vendors we choose. We believe this type of intentional legal practice is good for our clients, our community, and ourselves.
